"Gaya" is a Tibetan word, and it means "cut" - the meaning of a small box¹. In Tibetan Buddhism, the Gawu box is specially worn by tantric practitioners when going out. One is to pray for the blessing of the deity, and the other is to take it out and offer it during practice, making it a portable secret altar. The Gawu box can generally contain small Buddha statues, silk pieces with scriptures printed on them, relics or pills that have been chanted by eminent monks, as well as pieces of the living Buddha's hair and clothes, etc.
