Hayagriva is also known as Horsehead Guanyin (Sanskrit: हयग्रीव, Romanized: Hayagrīva), transliterated as "He Yehelifu", "Heye Jialipo", etc., meaning "horse's neck", and is revered by Buddhism For King Kong Ming. Esoteric Buddhism believes that King Hayagriva is the teaching wheel of Amitabha, the leader of the lotus tribe, or is manifested by Guanyin, who has many forms.

Corresponding to the Six Avalokitesvara Avalokitesvara described in the "Maha Zhiguan" by the wise master, it is the wrathful body of infinite life, with Avalokitesvara as its own nature and a horse on its head, so it is called Horse Head Avalokitesvara. It is in the form of great wrath, mighty and overwhelming, so it is called Horse-headed King. He is also the King of Lotus among the five kinds of kings. It is like the horse-drawn horse of the wheel-turning holy king galloping in all directions and overpowering it. It means wading through the sea of life and death to overwhelm the four directions. The great power of the devil is also the power of energy, and it also eats the meaning of ignorance and heavy obstacles. The Seventh Explanation of the Mahavairocana says: "The family members of the Lotus Flower tribe regard the horse's head as the wrathful king."

In the Supreme Yoga Department, it belongs to the mother tantra. When it manifests as the dual-luck deity, its mother Buddha has two colors according to the tradition: red and black Vajra Haimu. Hayagriva Du Yong also has two colors: red and black.

The main supreme tantra of Hayagriva is the Shengma Game Tantra. Some traditions include it and the branches of Red Avalokitesvara. The Nyingma sect recommends it as the Lotus Language. The Sakya has two types: Kunshi and Jigangpa. The Kagyu sect has two heritages, the terma and the new continuation, inherited from King Hayagriva, while the Gelug sect comes from two heritages, Sakya Gyampa and Nyingma Longchen (the main offering of Sera Hayagri Dracang).

The main merits of Hayagriva are: subduing all demonic obstacles of Rakshasa, ghosts, gods, and dragons, eliminating the obstacles of ignorance, plague, illness, and avoiding all evil curses and evil laws. By practicing the Dharma of this deity, you can achieve the fruition of the great bliss and emptiness without pain. Among all the deities, only Hayagriva has one or three horse heads on his hairline. This sign is the appearance of eating all sentient beings' ignorance of sin and destroying all fears.

Japanese Esoteric Buddhism

Horse-headed Avalokitesvara is the incarnation of Avalokitesvara, so it is also called "Horse-headed Avalokitesvara". It is one of the six Avalokitesvara and specializes in saving animals. Because of this relationship, Japanese Buddhism often uses Horse-headed Avalokitesvara as the representative deity when recommending animals.
